Positive Thinking

Positive thinking will let you do everything
better than negative thinking will.

Zig Ziglar

The power of the mind is phenomenal. Researchers at the Carnegie Mellon University have found that, even in the field of medical science, harnessing the power of mind can be very beneficial. For instance, in depressed people with a negative attitude, lymphocytes, which are the disease fighting cells in the body, respond less than in people with a positive outlook.

Teaching patients the art of positive self talk helps them fight disease better and get cured faster.

The journal proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reported that a study carried out by Dr Richard Davidson showed higher activity in the right pre-frontal cortex of the brain of people with higher levels of negative thoughts and emotions. More activity in the left pre-frontal cortex of the brain is associated with positive emotions. Negative brain activity was found to result in a weakened immune system, making people with negative thinking more susceptible to disease.

The greatest challenge faced by adult humans is applying new ideas. This is because, past reinforced ideas and behaviours are deeply ingrained. Another challenge is changing one’s habits – even after several months of change of a habit and even after experiencing the benefits, people often regress into old negative habits. This is so because the discomfort and stress of the change has not been fully overcome. Hence you need to be conscious of this risk when changing over to a new way of behaviour or attitude, and continue to be aware of the benefits of the new way.

Using your sub-conscious mind through visual and verbal reinforcements to develop a positive outlook can have a profound impact in maintaining better health, overcoming challenges, changes of habit, and achieving levels of attainment you may not normally have thought to be feasible.

You must recognize your uniqueness as a person. Having quotes, poems, ideas which are inspiring and self talk such as, “I am fit and energetic”, “I am successful”, “I am a great professional”, “I make a lot of money”, “My family/friends love me,” etc.

You can write them, say them aloud, and put them up in front at work and at home. Using visual pictures by putting up pictures of one receiving awards/recognition, owning a bigger home, bike/ car will reinforce your drive to attain these and spur you to positive action.

You should aim high in life. All success happen twice first in your mind and then in reality. You first have to create a mental picture of the attainment of what you desire and then be ready and willing to do what one needs to do, to achieve what one wants in life.

Thus having a positive attitude, dedicated effort and application of the power of the human conscious and sub conscious mind can do wonders.

Positive thoughts are

the wings to success

and happiness.
